Art Noveau Blooming Lotus - Beautifully Broken Pendant - Upcycled China in Sterling Silver
This pendant is made from a section of a broken china plate by stone cutter Sierra Stone Studios. This was a section of a gorgeous aqua blue plate with a pink, red & yellow lotus pattern. Sierra Stone Studios upcycles broken pottery and china by creating cabochons from the broken pieces. Jewelers like myself buy them to create unique, fun jewelry that promotes reusing materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill.
The setting for this piece was created with a fancy fine silver bezel wire soldered to a double-layer of sterling silver sheet. The back of the setting is textured with a free-form loopy pattern. Beneath the lotus are 2 detailed Art Noveau patterned fans, created with a die in a hydraulic press. Each is 2 layers, and backed with a mosaic pattern, but hung back to back. The kinetic movement resembles a 3-d tassel. Suspended from a 20" bright sterling silver rolo chain with lobster clasp closure. The entire piece is oxidized with liver of sulphur and buffed and polished to bring out the highlights of the metal.
