Prong-Set Fordite Heart Pendant in Sterling Silver
This incredible "gemstone" heart isn't actually a gem at all; it is hundreds of layers of hardened car paint, called Fordite. Skilled stone cutters cut this material to create striking cabochons. This cab is flat and about 5mm thick, with whorls of metallic blue, orange, white, red & black. I created an asymmetrical prong setting, so that you can see all the stripy side layers of paint. The prongs are soldered to 20 gauge sterling silver sheet. Suspended from sterling silver chain, finished with a lobster clasp. All silver has been oxidized in liver of sulphur and buffed to bring out highlights and add dimension. Pendant measures 2" tall and 1 1/2" wide and is shown on a 18" rolo chain.
